King size mattresses are the largest options in terms of bed dimensions. Typically, king mattresses measure approximately 76" wide by 80" long. King mattresses offer the most space for a single person. For those who sleep with another person or pets in the bed, king is the ideal choice.

Queen size mattresses measure approximately 60" wide by 80" long, making these mattresses 16 inches narrower than king size beds. Queen size mattresses are also the most popular mattress size in the industry, especially among those people who share their beds with someone else.

Full size mattresses, or double beds, measure approximately 54" wide by 75" long and are the perfect size for those people who are sleeping alone. Full size beds are smaller, both in length and width, than queen and king beds. Full size mattresses are less ideal for people who share the bed. Full size mattresses will fit easily into smaller rooms, such as a teenager's bedroom or an apartment bedroom. For one person, a full size mattress provides much more sleeping space than a twin, and therefore, much more comfort.

As the smallest size bed, twin size mattresses measure approximately 39" wide by 75" long. Twin size mattresses are the most affordable of all sizes, and the sheets and comforters needed for twins are the cheapest as well. Overwhelmingly, though, twin size mattresses are best suited for someone who sleeps alone.

Custom size mattresses are gaining momentum as a popular bed choice for people who require a specialized mattress. Many bed frames that are purchased overseas are found to require custom size mattresses. Luckily, many manufacturers today will custom-cut mattresses according to unusual dimensions.
